Why personalize your dog’s collar

Why-Personalize-Your-Dogs-Collar

Content strategist, project manager, and reluctant cat whisperer. 🙂 Going back to my love of and care for pets. Used to have a lot of dogs years ago until life and work happened. Now I still got an azkal-jack-russell terrier and a cat who keeps on insinuating herself in my life. My 5-year-old grandnephew loves pets so who knows? our menagerie just might grow.

While safe to say that almost all pet lovers love their dogs, a lot of them don’t give a lot of time and thought when it comes to buying their dog collar. Chances are they normally just buy one from the nearest pet store, check if it fits Fido’s neck, and then test to see if he is comfortable with it. Then of course they also see if the collar is strong enough to be tagged onto a chain. Because the last thing the pet owners want to happen when walking their beloved bulldog, dachshund, aspin (or fill in the breed here), is that the collar suddenly loosens up and somehow casts off the chain.

That scenario can have the hapless owner running around the neighborhood to rein in his pet and keep him and the people in the immediate vicinity safe.

While the comfort, safety, and strength that the dog collar provides are essential, there is more to it than just keeping our furry friend leashed. A dog collar can actually become your pet’s fashion statement or signature suit—it shows his personality and captures all the things that you love about him.

A dog collar is functional, yes, but it does not have to remain that way. It can be an extension of the best in him—the way that how you dress, walk, talk, and move around shows your best and most attractive features.

Aside from the name of the animal embedded in it, it can also have a small pouch that can contain pieces of paper that show his address (that’s your home address) and medical history. All that documentation keeps the pet safe—and increases the chances of his getting returned to his owner should he get lost.

First let’s go to the identification that the dog collar provides. Some smart owners have converted it into an ID. Aside from the name of the animal embedded in it, it can also have a small pouch that can contain pieces of paper that show his address (that’s your home address) and medical history. All that documentation keeps the pet safe—and increases the chances of his getting returned to his owner should he get lost. A compassionate stranger who runs into him can easily track you down. And if the dog at that point in time is showing some unnatural behavior or scars caused by a quick fight, then that stranger can have an idea of what might be besetting him. And so will the veterinarian who will soon look at him.

Now let’s go to the dog collar’s style. Making it complement your pet’s overall look is not just cool, it will accentuate his or her best side. Don’t just immediately settle for a black or brown collar. Let your own aesthetic sense work a bit. Mix and match. For example, does that green collar blend in with your dog’s light brown fur? Does the blue one make his black and white spots stand out even more? Or maybe you just prefer to put a red collar on him because it fits his seemingly limitless energy?

You can also pick the dog collar based on how he makes you and your loved ones feel. Yellow speaks of optimism and indicates the cheerfulness he brings to your life every time you feel down and depressed. Orange can represent the way he learns fast, and comes up with new tricks that surprise and stun you.

The material of the dog collar can also give a hint of his wonderful characteristics that perhaps only you know about. Hemp, known for its durability and imperviousness to wear and tear, can suit that loyal Aspin who’s been with you through thick and thin—and stuck with you throughout accidents, hospital confinements, storms, and floods, maybe even helping you to safety or comforting you when you’re lonely.

Good old leather is classic and classy—and perfect for those dignified dogs who always look poised and composed, even if a hissing cat is nearby. One such example is these color exclusive leather dog collars from Bow & Wow.

Then there are the colorful fabrics that are easy on the eyes, comfortable on the fur, and appear like they were knitted by your Mom or favorite aunt. Their rainbow hues and warm texture will look smooth and cushy on your homebody dogs, the ones who prefer to sleep on rugs, nestle at your feet, and would take a lot of cajoling before they join you in a jog outside the house.
